1973- Bilingual Education in the Northern Territory
According to ABC Four Corners (2009) bilingual education in the Northern Territory began as a Federal Labor initiative a few hours after Gough Whitlam's government had been elected. Kim Beazley was the Federal Minister of Education at the time. “Mr Beazley explained that bilingual programs were favoured at the time as the best route to mastery of English as a second language” (ABC Four Corners, 2009).
Living Knowledge, Indigenous knowledge in Science Education (2008) state that the bilingual program delivered the first real opportunity for indigenous people to decide the type and style of education they wanted for their children.
