1982- NSW Aboriginal Education Policy
The first New South Wales Aboriginal Education Policy was developed in 1982, as directed by the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and Department of Education and Training (DET).
This policy emphasised improvements in educational outcomes for Aboriginal students and for all students to be educated about Aboriginal Australia.
“It focused on involving Aboriginal communities and students in education, enhancing Aboriginal students’ self-esteem and cultural identity, and teaching all students about Aboriginal societies past and present” (New South Wales government, Aboriginal education, board of studies NSW, 2010).
According to the Aboriginal education unit, NSW Department of School Education (n.d.) the emphasis of this policy is the quality of teaching and learning programs in schools for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and the manner in which the content is taught.
